In total, above the 7th floor there were 59 boundary columns along each face of the building and there were 47 heavier columns in the core. The tower also consisted of truss system that allowed some load redistribution between the perimeter and core columns and supported the transmission tower The towers also consisted of a "hat truss" or "outrigger truss" located between the 107th and 110th floors, which consisted of six trusses along the long axis of core and four along the short axis. It was found to play a key role in the collapse sequence (NIST 6-17, 2005). WTC towers like all modern day skyscrapers were designed in a perfet way to survive major fires. After the fire incide nce in 1975 that spread to six floors before being extinguished, fireproofing was also added to the two towers (Hamburger 2:1-40). It is said that while designing these towers, the possibility of any accedent by aircraft was also taken into consederation. John Skilling, who had been in charge of the structural design of the buildings said that an aircraft impact would cause a great deal of damage and loss of life, mainly because of the cunsequent fires, but he claiment that the structure would not collapse (Nalder n. pag). Leslie Robertson, who had also participated in the structural design of the towers, after the 9/11 attack said that the towers had in fact been designed to withstand the impact of the largest airliner such as the Boeing 707-320. According to Robertson, the modeled aircraft weighed 263,000 lb (119 metric tons) with a flight speed of 180 mph (290 km/h), as in approach and landing. However, this would have been much slower than the actual impacts of 9/11. He also said that they lacked a good understanding and did not antiocipate the effects of such large fires on the structures (Robertson n. pag). Unfortunately, the designers Skilling and Robertson and many others had not anticipated sush an event while designing the buildings. Impact of the Fire Though both the towers were cinstructed in such a mannar with fireproofing, none of us anticipated such a attack. Once the aircrafts hit the towers the light construction and hollow nature of the structures allowed the jet fuel to penetrate deep inside the towers simultanously igniting many large fires over a wide area of the impacted floors. Once the fuel from the planes burned out the contents of the buildings cought fire and burned over the next hour or hour and a half (Field 2004). Many people has suggested that the fires may not have penetrated deep into the core of the building rathere the debris and fuel would likely have remained mostly outside the buildings or concentrated in more peripheral areas away from the building cores. But in this scenario, the towers might have stood far longer, perhaps indefinitely (Gross 2004). The fires were hot enough and were responsible for weakening the columns and cause floors to sag down resulting in pulling perimeter columns

I do not deny the fact that college life would lead me a better future. There are many reasons for why I decided to go to college. One reason I decided to go to college is that I want to have a better career. I know some of you might said theres no need to have a college diploma in order to get a job. Yes, this is true. But will you believe you can actually get the jobs that you really wanted, or the jobs that you will enjoy from it. My answer is not so sure. I say that not many places would take many serious if you just had a High school Diploma. I argue that if I go to college, I can gain more informations and expand my knowledge in lots of different area, as well as the area that I have most interested in. In todays world, lots of job require education to have beyond high school level, so if I have attend college, I will have more jobs opportunities in my future life. Some people might say that they also can get lots of jobs when they dont have college diploma, but I say do you think that you really can get the same paid and same treatments when you c ompare to those that had already attend college? In my future life, I want to have a job that I wont complain about the paid or any others unfair treatment. I want to get a career that I wanted instead of the career that I can get. A Christmas Carol - character study of Scrooge "A Christmas Carol" ââ¬Å"Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!â⬠Scrooge is the main character in the novel ââ¬ËA Christmas Carolââ¬â¢. At the beginning of the novel he is a brutal, evil, pitiless, cold-hearted man, but subsequent to meeting three spirits, Scrooge regrets his life and decides he needs to alter it. The main theme Charles Dickens conveys through the story is redemption; this is significant especially in the Victorian era, whilst there was an immense gap between the prosperous and the inadequate. Dickens uses Scrooge (a rich, greedy business man) to direct his novel to the very rich people, and to exhibit how money can impede your good judgement. Charlesââ¬â¢s life influenced his writing, like in ââ¬ËA Christmas Carolââ¬â¢; you can relate his stories to his life. Most of Dickens writing was regarding poverty because at the time he was deprived. He had to work in a factory when he was only twelve and when he was fifteen he was employed in a solicitors office, therefore he empathizes what being a clerk was like, as one of the characters in ââ¬ËA Christmas Carolââ¬â¢. Dickens chose to call his story ââ¬ËA Christmas Carolââ¬â¢ because carols have some moral background and to teach people a lesson, and thatââ¬â¢s exactly what Dickens wanted to do, he wanted people to learn something from reading this novel. Another reason why Dickens called his story ââ¬ËA Christmas Carolââ¬â¢ is because it was written at Christmas time. The idea of a song is continued in the structure of the novel because it is divided into staves rather than chapters, which remind us of a song. Dickens incorporates Victorian Christmas traditions into his story, as well as prom... ...y Tim, who fortunately does not die. Scrooge is able to redeem himself by becoming a better person; from cruel and cold-hearted man to a kind loving person. This links back to the idea of the Christianity and redemption and the religious term referring to being saved. I n this case, Scrooge is being saved from dying a lonely, sad, old man. Scroogeââ¬â¢s story relates to society because it people that if a man as bad as Scrooge can change and transform himself for the better , the everyone else can as well then our society would be a much better place for us to live in. The moral lesson that Dickens wants to convey is not to be greedy, donââ¬â¢t let money obstruct your good judgement and money does not buy you happiness. Another lesson Dickens wants to teach his readerââ¬â¢s is that even if you havenââ¬â¢t been good all your life just like Scrooge you could also change.

John Boweââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Annals of Labor Nobodiesâ⬠is a very ugly article describing the virtual slavery of agricultural workers. Reminiscent of public attitude toward and awareness of domestic abuse and pedophilia in most of the Twentieth Century, modern slavery is buried deep in a cesspool of ignorance, apathy and denial. Those at the ââ¬Å"top of the heapâ⬠are protected by ââ¬Å"buffer layersâ⬠and deniability. Fear and brutality are tools employed to maintain the silence. Resources and alternatives for victims are scarce or nonexistent. These are among the themes presented by Boles in his review of dirty secret of one of Americaââ¬â¢s largest industries, fresh produce production; while he presents a little hope, the situation will continue to exist. South Florida is one of the nationââ¬â¢s greatest citrus and tomato production areas and ââ¬Å"ground zero for modern slaveryâ⬠(Bowe, 3). Bowe describes the plight of the undocumented Mexican and Central American workers from the time of departure from their homes to their arrival in South Florida. It is a story of an ââ¬Å"opportunityâ⬠to terrific homeland poverty which can be worse than what they left. Workers are conned and exploited throughout their journey, paying exorbitant sums to every one in the vicious chain. They are so impoverished and terrified that slave labor is their only option. As a Border Patrol agent remarked ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re controllable. Thereââ¬â¢s no escapeâ⬠(s). There has been a great deal of consolidation of the produce farms as well as their huge customers. There are many familiar names in the food chain: ConAgra, Cargill, Tropicana, Minute Maid, Coke, Pepsi and Taco Bell. All claim a ââ¬Å"hands offâ⬠to the issue of slave labor picking their tomatoes and oranges. The industry has long enjoyed special status exempting it from many labor laws, including overtime pay, workersââ¬â¢ compensation and the right to organize. Unfortunately although the price of the produce may increase, the price of labor decreases due to the large pool of workers coming from Mexico and Central America. In 2000 the Trafficking Victims Act was made into law; unfortunately the usual congressional deal-making resulted in exempting everyone except the labor contractors from fines and imprisonment. The cases are difficult to make. Victims and witnesses are too terrified to testify. Even if they were willing and able to testify their migratory work patterns make them difficult to find. As usual the blanket of ââ¬Å"limited resourcesâ⬠in law enforcement as well as state and federal prosecution offices is used but not believed. Paraphrasing one anonymous laborer, they and their plight is virtually invisible to the outside world. Slow change is coming about and with it a shred of hope for those enslaved. Legal and social service agencies are starting to reach this dark world, and loose coalitions of workers are growing. According to one former tomato picker ââ¬Å"change wonââ¬â¢t come from Washington or from the lawyers. It will come from people in the field. If you change peopleââ¬â¢s consciousness, the people themselves will take care of itâ⬠(6). à He is right, of course, and the hope is if change wonââ¬â¢t come from Washington and the lawyers, at least they will be an ally and not an impediment. After the sentencing of convicted human traffickers the federal trial judge mentioned to the U.S. Attorneys prosecuting the case that they should not exhaust the ââ¬Å"limited resourcesâ⬠prosecuting low-level thugs and enforcers. The judge, likely mindful of the powerful federal conspiracy laws, stated ââ¬Å"others at a higher level of the fruit picking industry seem complicit in one way or another with how these activities occurâ⬠(11).
